March Tip: As a caregiver, it can be tempting to try and do it all for your client. While that may be faster and more efficient, it’s important that you encourage them to maintain their independence to the level that they are able. Research shows that keeping older adults engaged can help them retain cognitive function and enjoy independence longer. Encourage your clients to assist with tasks they are able to perform, such a folding laundry, writing out a grocery list, putting things away, etc. Of course, you never want to push your client to perform tasks that they are physically unable to do, but encouraging them to get involved in their daily care is an important part of allowing them to remain independent at home.
