You’ve made the first important step in selecting the right home care provider.  Once you acquire the names of several agencies, you will want to learn more about their services and reputations. Listed below are some brief definitions, followed by a checklist of questions to ask and what answers to listen for.

Medicare Home Health agency:  A Medicare agency is licensed by the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH).  It provides 2 or more skilled services under a physician’s orders.  Its services are usually reimbursed by Medicare and/or private insurance.  Hourly and Live-in care are not provided by these types of agencies.

Private duty home care agency:  Illinois Department of Public Health licenses all private duty companies.  A reputable agency will be licensed by the IDPH.  Agencies can have either a Home Services License, a Home Nursing License or both.  LifeStyle Options, Inc. has both Home Services and Home Nursing Licenses.

Registry/employment or placement agency: A registry lS NOT the caregivers’ employer.  ALL liability rests with the client.  When this type of agency says it’s licensed and bonded, it is NOT referring to its caregivers but only to its agency license.  BE CAREFUL!  You will be responsible for all background checks, supervision, liability and worker’s compensation insurance, taxes, relief workers, etc.

QUESTIONS TO ASK

check.jpgIs your agency licensed by the Department of Public Health?

Be sure to select only licensed agencies – licensed by the Department of Public Health – NOT the Department of Labor. Only registries hold these “licenses” and they are NOT employers. You are at 100% risk.

check.jpgHow long has your company been in business?

It is very easy to open a home care company however it is very difficult to stay in business providing good service year after year. Try to validate any response you receive. LifeStyle Options, Inc. has been in business for 25 years.

check.jpgDo you supply literature explaining your services and fees?

All reputable companies are able to supply this information. In addition, many agencies also have web sites you can visit for further information.

check.jpg How do you select and train your employees? Do you protect your workers with written personnel policies, benefits packages, and malpractice insurance?

Be sure the agency not only requires English speaking but also performs careful background checks including fingerprints, references and criminal background checks.  Again, be aware that registries/employment agencies are NOT the employer and do NOT provide any protection for you or for their caregivers.

check.jpg Do you assign supervisors to oversee the quality of care patients are receiving in their homes?  Who can we call with questions or complaints?

The agency you select should offer free care conferences to set up services as well as supervisory visits.  A case manager should be available for any questions or complaints.

check.jpgWhat are the financial procedures of your agency? Do you furnish written statements explaining all of the costs?  What type of guarantee do you offer?

You should expect to see a written invoice that details the days and hours care was provided.  Additionally, a reliable company will guarantee your 100% satisfaction.

check.jpg Are your caregivers available 24 hours a day, seven days a week?

You will want to be sure the agency has a company employee available 24/7 – not just a voice mail or answering service.
